Mouse

Here's another mouse I drew while working on the same project.

Baby

I'm working on a little project, but I'm still suffering from my creative slump/artist's block :(.

Illustration Friday: Idle

This week's Illustration Friday theme is idle. I've been suffering from a bout of artist's block recently and have been disappointingly creatively idle.

Degrees

A chronicle of my experience watching Children of Men (in keeping with yesterday's post).

Sick bunny

This is a bunnyperson who has been watching a movie with a lot of handheld camerawork and is feeling ill as a result.

Rabbity creature

I just sketched this guy out in pencil and added some color in Photoshop. What do you think his story is?

Oops!

I lost track of time and missed my midnight deadline. Oops! Here's today's post.

Another whale

I drew this at the same time as the zebra and the birdie from my earlier posts.

Portrait

This was based on a photo that I came across on the internet. It may have been of a very young Mick Jagger or someone who looked a bit like him. I'm really liking drawing in Illustrator using the various strokes and creating kind of a clean drawing/silkscreen look.

Getty sketching gallery revisited

My parents are visiting this weekend, and today we went back to the Getty and spent some time in the sketching gallery (see this entry for more details on my first visit). A guy stood behind me for awhile and gave me some unsolicited criticism after I was all finished, but other than that it was a good time. My mom posted her sketch - check it out here. We drew two sculptures of a pair of sisters.

As a side note, you can also see her version of a handedness drawing here, and Sean's version here. (Sean's right-handed and my mom is left-handed). I love the way these turned out!

Balloon Boy

This is based on an illustrator file I found on my computer from about five years ago, from an ad job. I changed the look of it and fixed things that I'd done poorly because my knowledge of Illustrator was much more limited back then. You can click on it to see a clearer version.

Stack of books

Here's an image of a stack of books just using a single black shape.

100 posts!

Today marks my hundredth day of posting a daily creation!

Posting while listening to Craig Armstrong's Glasgow Love Theme. It's been running through my head all day.

Handedness revisited

Here's the updated version of my experiment. I don't think my feet have gotten anymore dextrous. I bet if I practiced this regularly I would improve, but I think there are more productive things I could do with my time. If you can't read my foot penmanship, the bottom two "drawings" each took 2 minutes.

Handedness

It's pretty late and I'm having computer troubles, so here's another vintage creation. This one is from 2004, and represents a drawing and its attempted replication by each of my four appendages. You can see a larger version if you click on the image.

I think I'll do another one of these for 2009. I'll be posting it soon!

Girl in a hat

This is something I did for a job a couple of years ago. I painted the color by hand and then added the lines in Illustrator after scanning the painted background.

Air Plant

I love air plants! Here's a painting of one that we used to own. Sadly, I didn't spray it often enough and it expired.

Girl drinking soda

This is another older item, but I'm short on time and wanted to post something. It's based on a photo by West Rock.

July 6, 2009

Girl with bangs

Ok, to be honest, this is really old. I don't have time to create something new, though, so it'll do. This was one of the very first things I drew after I got my tablet a few years ago (thanks, Mom and Dad!). I drew it in Photoshop.

Stretched neck

This was sort of based on a prompt from Sean that related to something he was working on.

Quick sketch of a politician

I drew this quick sketch based on a photo in Rolling Stone, but I don't remember the name of the politician.

Felt version of skating boy

This is the felt version of the skating boy that I referred to in this post. I didn't remember what colors I'd ended up using, so they're a little different from the vector version.

Crocheted body

This is something I created a couple of years ago. I completed most of it while riding in the car from LAX to Hollywood during rush hour and then stuffed it with a stocking-like fabric (that I got along with a lot of other fabric remnants from a kindhearted Craigslister). It would have worked much better if I'd used something like polyfil, but I didn't have any at the time and I was impatient to finish it and stitch it up.

The result is that there's a weight and floppiness to this body that feels almost realistic. The head flops around a bit too much. I'm not sure where to go from here in terms of features, clothing, etc. I think maybe I just kind of like it the way it is. I did it all freeform with no pattern, using a 100% cotton yarn. One of the things I love about crochet is that you can make it up as you go along and come out with something really cool. I find it much more intuitive than knitting in this way. I wasn't really sure what I was going to create when I started, but I ended up with a person. It's 14" long from head to toe.

Shorpy portrait

Here's another Shorpy face, taken from a really cool group photo.
